The iconic Malpass Hotel in North Queensland has been sold

3 mins read

Townsville, Australia – An iconic pub in North Queensland’s Burdekin Shire, around an hour south of Townsville, has sold within just two weeks of going on the market.

The Malpass Hotel, situated at 145-151 Eighth Avenue in the charming rural town of Home Hill, was purchased by the owner and operator of Townsville Brewing Co.

The sale was negotiated by Glen Cummins of Knight Frank on behalf of the vendor, Mariano Jr Banares and Lilibeth Myles.

The Malpass Hotel, which occupies a 4,292sq m site on Bruce Highway, has a public bar, bistro, family-friendly beer garden, kids’ play area, renovated guest accommodation and a high-performing drive-through bottle shop.

Having first opened in 1924 by local identity Joseph Malpass, the long-standing and well-regarded pub is now more than 100 years old.

Situated in the heart of Home Hill, the hotel is strategically positioned to capture both local patronage and passing trade from the busy Bruce Highway.

The buyer is growing their North Queensland presence, adding to an existing Townsville and Magnetic Island portfolio after identifying a strong local opportunity. The venue is set for a July relaunch, with the kitchen reopening alongside live music and TAB/Keno offerings.

Mr Cummins said the iconic property attracted strong buyer interest during the sales campaign, with an offer being accepted within two weeks of the property being on the market.

“We had strong enquiry from locals, as well as operators from across Queensland and interstate,” he said.

“The successful buyers are local publicans who are keen to retain the local feel and strong community presence.

“The Malpass Hotel has established itself as a cornerstone of the region’s social and entertainment scene, servicing both locals and visitors.

“It has multiple revenue streams via the bar, bistro, accommodation and bottle shop, and has been renovated, meaning there is very little capital expenditure required.

“The profitable, well-managed hotel offers immediate cash flow, as well as growth potential, with opportunities to expand marketing, introduce new events, and capitalise on the growing tourism sector in North Queensland.”
