_First major milestone reached in ALS Sydney Smithfield Refurbishment project
Early site works on the ALS Sydney Smithfield Facility Refurbishment project, which aims to upgrade and expand the existing laboratory and office spaces at the 277-303 Woodpark Road site, are now complete, with the major works to commence in July 2025.
The project is driven by the need to combine Environmental and National Bottle Prep operations into a single facility, refresh an underutilised asset, and expand capacities in line with future growth plans.
Knight Frank are working closely with Connected, who has been engaged under a design and build agreement to oversee the design phase and early works package.
The early works involved the warehouse column strengthening and roof replacement to ensure the facility was watertight ahead of the main works package.
The roof replacement has presented a valuable opportunity to prioritise sustainability through recycling, with all demolished items in the early works roofing package being recycled, and saved from landfill. Approximately 60,000 roofing screws, 10,000sq m of existing roof sheeting, 7,500sq m of wire mesh and 34 smoke louvres have been identified for recycling.
Knight Frank’s Director, Project Management Larry Wagenheim said: “This is a significant project win for our business, where we will work with ALS Global on the precinct until 2027.
“The project strengthens our service offering in the laboratory sector with focus on sustainability.
“Through diverting these materials from landfill, this initiative not only promotes environmental responsibility but also showcases a commitment to reducing waste and reusing resources.”
Knight Frank National Head of Project Management Mark Blinco said:
