_Property of the week: 94 River Street, South Yarra, Melbourne

Monolithic urban design takes form in three rare River Street residences.
September 12, 2019

94 River Street

With monikers such as the ‘Tall House’, the ‘Pool House’ and the ‘Penthouse’, 94 River Street is a development the likes of which Melbourne has not seen before: a big call, but an appropriate one when considering the discerning development approach of couple, Anatoly (Toly) Mezhov and Irene Polo, who together, create a vision for ‘Future Cities.’

Future Cities is the name of the pair’s development company, but it is also a credo for the company’s discerning urban design. How should our future cities look, and how are we to feel in our homes? This is something they ponder on and have come to a conclusion through the collaboration with top architects and designers on their most recent project, 94 River Street South Yarra. Future Cities’ consistent goal for any enterprise they embark on, is to provide innovation in design and concept, and to create unique spaces in which people can flourish.

The residences

In keeping with this vision, 94 River Street is almost a large-scale sculpture imagined as a building, and one which challenges standard design concepts currently being marketed across the city. Comprised of three superb dwellings designed by Buckerfield Architects, with considered and crafted interior design by Paul Hecker of Hecker Guthrie. Each entirely unique residence will simultaneously have airy lightness and sculptural monumentalism. These are three individual homes that are carefully placed together.

Paul Hecker says, “The renders are just a starting point for discussion, as they are completely customisable to suit the occupants’ desires. Each dwelling has been designed for an individual, a professional couple or a family. The generosity and scale of these spaces is remarkable. River Street is a true home.”

The River Street homes are endlessly flexible, but each residence has its own identity and feature. Robert Buckerfield of Buckerfield Architecture says; ‘With the design of River Street, we wanted to create a  sense of monumentalism from the street, and a grand entry.’

Each home has ‘essentials’ such as climate-controlled wine storage, walk in robes, a luxurious bathroom suite over-looking light filled courtyard (or city views), fully specified kitchens with European appliances by V-Zug and Liebher. All Kitchens have a new age streamlined design concept that can be easily closed away with a cupboard frontage, removing clutter, and maximising liveable space.

"River Street is targeting side-sizers wanting to move out of high maintenance homes, but not wanting to compromise on space. The aesthetic will appeal to a more cosmopolitan buyer and connoisseurs of bold design."

Landscaping

The building’s form is perforated with large light filled courtyards and terraces that will diffuse light throughout the homes and simultaneously provide each residence with meditative abundant landscaped vistas.

Landscape Architect Brett Robinson from Acre has carefully selected the vegetation throughout River Street to flourish and create internal micro-climates. The Tall House presents a lush fernery, whilst the Pool House will be resplendent with abundant plantings of exotics and natives and finally an airy bright Mediterranean feel will crown the Penthouse with sun loving species and Australian natives.

Brett Robinson says, “We selected plant species that will chase either the sun or the shade. The landscaping enables light to enter from all sides, so residents can enjoy the changing light throughout the day.”

Future Cities Developer, Anatoly Mezhov concludes, “We have designed homes that we would be happy to live in our ourselves, as each house has a unique feel and feature. Each River Street  residence is engineered for living delightfully in an urban setting.”
